Getting Rid of Acne from the Inside
For the last 15 years, I have struggled with acne. I have had strangers on the street stop me and recommend products, pills, or professionals who can help me. I have struggled through blackheads, and whiteheads, and deep cystic acne. I have spent tons of money on acid facial peels, antibiotics, and salicylic acid products. Finally, after all these years, I have smooth, clear skin. What worked for me was to clear my skin from the inside out. This gave me the long term results I desired.
Here are the 5 steps I took:
I balanced my Blood Sugar
Do you breakout more when you consume certain foods? Be a detective – note what happens after you eat chocolate, dairy products, alcohol or junk food. Also note when you normally consume these foods. If you allow your blood sugar to drop and then indulge in sweets or junk food, these insulin spikes can lead to breakouts. Excessive insulin results in chronic inflammation which affects your skin. If you choose to eat these foods, time them carefully. Starving yourself and then eating sweets will wreck havoc on your skin.
To prevent sugar cravings, incorporate plenty of proteins and vegetables in your diet. Include healthy fats such as avocado and raw nuts.Try to eliminate common culprits such as milk products and sugar then observe if there is a change to your skin. If you must indulge, limit the sweets to once or twice weekly, and have them after a meal.
Healthy Omegas are your friend
I have found these to be vital in clearing the skin. This is because omega 3 and 6 regulate inflammation in the body. Omega 3 reduces inflammation, while omega 6 increases it. When there is too much inflammation in the body, your body is unable to properly remove toxins or balance hormones. Increasing your levels of omega 3 rich foods will help lower inflammation. Such foods are cod liver oil, flax seeds, raw nuts and seeds, oily fish such as omena, salmon and sardines, organic eggs, and even supplements. But if you use a supplement, choose one that contains omega 3 alone.
I Ate at Least One Raw Carrot Daily
Many of us experience acne around the jawline. This could be a sign of oestrogen dominance. Raw carrots have a fiber that binds with and helps to eliminate the excess oestrogen in the body. This can also help with PMS symptoms. Of course the obvious point we have not mentioned is to drink plenty of water. Two to three litres a day minimum.
I reduced Oestrogen sources in my environment
The chemicals found in skincare products, cleaning products, plastics, and processed foods, mimic oestrogen in the body. This excess oestrogen circulates in the body causing acne. Use soap flakes instead of commercial detergent to wash your clothes. Instead of fabric softeners, use white vinegar and essential oils in the final rinse of your clothes Replace your chemical creams, lotions and deodorants with natural skincare products such as coconut oil, Shea butter, Aloe Vera and Olive oil, among others.
I detox my lymph regularly
The lymphatic system lies beneath the skin, and it is responsible for flushing out toxins. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymph does not have a pump to help it move wastes. We have to make it move through exercise, especially jumping (trampoline, jogging, dancing, skipping are a few good ones.) Apart from keeping active, dry skin brushing is a simple and effective way to detox the lymph. Massages, steam baths and sauna treatments may seem luxurious but they work well in keeping acne at bay because they help remove toxins from our skin. Make room in your schedule and your budget for self-care. I learned to regularly work out and to pamper myself. These steps are what gave me clear, beautiful skin after years of trying everything.
With acne, there are no shortcuts.
