Hair Care

How to teach your daughter to do her own hair

Q: I have three daughters and I have not found a suitable hairdresser for them. So I do their hair myself. When should I begin to teach them to do their own hair? How should I start?

A: Teaching your little girl to love and care for her hair will help her grow into a confident young lady with strong

self-esteem. Start early by showing them what to do at bedtime and bathtime.

Even from the age of 2 or 3 years, little girls can learn to put on a shower cap in the bath and a

satin bonnet at night. Just as you show them how to brush teeth, teach them to spray their hair daily with a

moisturising spritz.

As they turn 5, 6 and 7 years of age, they can follow the spraying with applying some whipped

butter, or moisturiser onto their hair, especially the ends. From age 7 she can also undo large plaits for herself.

Of course, all this is under your supervision, or with the help of the Nanny.

With practise, by the age of 8 or 9, girls can undo their hair, finger-detangle and comb with a wide-tooth comb, apply

conditioner and rinse in the shower. She can also put her hair into a ponytail, a single wide band, or two pigtails

(pussycat style) or even two lines, by herself.

Supervise her, commend her even when she does an imperfect job, and keep showing her until she masters it.

Always schedule plenty of time for doing hair together.

Use it as your bonding time.

Do not attempt to do her hair when you are busy, rushed or stressed, as this will make it painful for her and

unpleasant for both of you.
