[email protected] : The Nairobi Natural Hair Event of the Year!
This event was Lit! The East African Natural Hair scene is officially
abuzz on fire!
This Saturday Naturals in Nairobi had 5 good reasons to celebrate during the Facebook Group Kurly Diaries’ 5th anniversary event.
The Kurly Diaries group was formed by a team of passionate Naturalistas in response to a need for the Natural Hair Community to have regular events. The first one, Kurls and Cocktails, brought together a crowd of over 100 women back in 2012. Held at a leading Nairobi Hotel, women who had previously become acquainted on Facebook finally got to meet in person. The bonding was instant : Ladies spoke from the heart about their natural hair experiences, older Naturals mentored and encouraged new ones; all present shared laughter and a very real camaraderie that led to the bonds of sisterhood for which KD is well-known. So here we are 5 years on, on a sunny (albeit slightly nippy) Saturday afternoon, together with key influencers from the burgeoning Natural Hair Industry in Kenya.
Where: Kwani? grounds at Riverside
Theme: Denim and Bandanas picnic
For those of you who missed the fun, here’s how it went down!
Selfies galore to commemorate the smiles, instastories, hawt outfits, hypnotic beats and beautiful hair #[email protected]
The event welcomed all Naturalistas, including this
fine piece of eye candy gentleman with traditional locs.
All natural hairstyles were well represented, like this makeup artist who rocked her luscious braids
Friends were thrilled to see each other, and local Natural Hair product vendors offered special discounts for the day
Ess Kay, CEO of Ruzena Naturals, and her Co-Host Suzanne Wanjaria, graciously put together the entire event. Dennis Mwangi Wa’ Gladys, hair stylist at Amadiva salon, represented the hair care professionals. Wangeci Wandere of African Kaya and Foodies Club Nairobi, brought the delish bar-b-q eats.
Thick, fluffy afros and colourful outfits. Bold twist-outs and hearty laughs. The vibe was relaxed, fun and exciting.
Carol Tichie of apparelandaccessories made sure the type3s weren’t left out. She slayed with her ultra defined curls.
Mad love, and mad fun – the DJs were lit! The dance-off had folks shaking their booty. Not to mention the tug of war!All in all, the who’s who’s of Kenya’s natural hair scene all supported the event. Sheila Ndinda, Tabitha Tongoi, Lucy Kingori, Michelle Ntalani, Wambui JL, (who was one of the hillarious MCees!) and many, many more added to the festive occasion. An award ceremony took place for the top performers in various categories, and 5 delicious cakes were cut and eaten to celebrate this tremendous milestone of 5 years. Here is to the next 5,the next 10, the next 50 years of this momentous Natural Hair Revolution.
