BBK (Black Beauty Kween ) is a Natural Hair Influencer who hails from Africa and currently lives in the U.K. . In this exclusive interview, she shares with Tricia’s Naturals how she has gently tended her daughter’s natural hair from the time she was 2 years old for the past 4 years. She uses this same regimen to date – her daughter is now 6 years old. Thanks BBK!:-)
Step 1~ Shampoo:
I do not pour shampoo directly onto my daughter’s hair unless I’m using a moisturising shampoo. I instead focus on the scalp. It is not necessary or healthy to vigorously rub the scalp- this can sometimes lead you to pull out and break the hair, and can also irritate the scalp, so I’m very gentle during the cleansing process since she’s very tender headed.
Step 2~ The Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse:
After I shampoo and rinse the hair, I mix the apple cider vinegar with water into a plastic bottle, leaning my daughter’s head back I pour the rinse over her entire scalp, allowing the mixture to run through the hair then I rinse it out with warm water.
Washing the hair with Apple Cider Vinegar reduces itchy scalp and dandruff by destroying the bacteria and fungi that clog hair follicles.
Step 3~ Light Protein Treatment:
Once the apple cider vinegar has been completely rinsed out from the hair and scalp, I apply a protein treatment to all four sections of my daughter’s hair. Our favorite protein treatment is L’Oréal Elvive Full Restore Repairing conditioner( it’s a very light protein which leaves the hair super soft and strengthens the hair too). I apply a generous amount to each section and gently finger detangle. I follow up with a wide tooth comb as the conditioner has a lot of slip and smells absolutely beautiful. Finally, I rinse it out with warm water.
It’s important to do a light protein treatment because hair is made up of 70 percent protein. This means we have to keep replenishing the protein in our hair with protein treatments.
Step 4~ Oil Rinse:
I apply a generous amount of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to all four sections of the hair to coat the hair. I allow it to sit on the hair for a few minutes while I finger detangle( the oil makes detangling a breeze). Afterwards, I rinse the access oil out leaving a little in the hair.
The purpose of oil rinsing is to stop the hair feeling dry after a protein treatment and to add softness and shine.
Step 5~ Moisturising:
Next, I apply a leave-in conditioner (Herbal Essence Hello Hydration). It nourishes, moisturises the hair, prevents breakage, softens the hair and aids in detangling. I braid each section and allow it to air dry. Once the hair is 80 percent dry, I apply my BBK butter cream to seal the moisture in.
Night Time Routine:
My daughter’s her hair is kept in 2-4 braids for bed every night & she sleeps with a satin scarf. I re- moisturise 1-2 times a week depending on how she wears her through out the week. I also apply oil to her ends to prevent knots & tangles. I only trim her hair twice a year.
