Budget-Friendly Hair Treatments to Make at Home

TN Member Question: I cannot afford to purchase a long list of products but my hair needs regular treatments. What can I use to improvise?

Hair care can be expensive! Whether you are making regular salon visits or using products at home, going natural can be shockingly costly. Thankfully you can mix your own treatments from kitchen ingredients. Here are three affordable treatments which will leave your hair moisturized and manageable.

Pre-shampoo  detangling treatment:

Mix a cup of plain yoghurt with a tablespoon of honey. Use the thickest yoghurt you can get, as this contains more protein. Greek yoghurt is best but homemade yoghurt or mala works just as well. Cover with plastic cap and let marinate. Massage gently then rinse and repeat using your favourite cheapie conditioner to do a co-wash.

Moisturising deep conditioning treatment for dull, dry hair:

Blend one overripe banana, 1 avocado, and 2 tablespoons of ghee, olive oil or cooking oil. If you don’t own a high powered blender, press the mixture through a sieve before applying. Apply to clean, freshly washed hair.  Cover with a plastic cap and rinse out after 30 minutes to an hour. Rinse and style as usual.

A protein treatment to restore strengthen brittle hair.

Mix 1 egg and a cup of thick coconut milk. Optional – add 1 tablespoon of molasses. Apply onto clean hair and cover with plastic cap. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm or cold water to avoid cooking the egg. Finish with your normal moisturizing conditioner.

These are just a few simple ones you can try this weekend. What are some of your favourite DIY hair recipes?
