Cellulite – What causes it and how to get rid of it.
By Naomi Nasinyari
Cellulite affects 90% of women and up to 20% of men. Cellulite is not fat. It is caused by weak collagen structure or poor lymph drainage. You develop cellulite when your muscles shrink, your body holds onto toxins or you retain fluid.
Here are 6 ways to naturally reduce cellulite.
Exercise vigorously (sweat) for a minimum of 20 minutes three times a week. The best exercise for cellulite is not cardio, but strength training. This builds the atrophied muscles. Cellulite targets the hips, thighs, and bottom, therefore the best exercises would include squats, lunges, hip lifts and leg raises.
2. Increase your intake of potassium and water
Did you know that models usually go on a sodium free diet, high in fruits and vegetables for up to a month before a photo shoot? The right diet is vital to reducing cellulite. Potassium helps remove of stagnant cellular matter and improves circulation.
To achieve the RDA of potassium, you would need to eat the equivalent of 12 bananas. Instead, eat a variety of vegetables, at least 5 servings a day. Note that sodium and potassium work hand in hand. You need to decrease your sodium, and increase potassium. Sodium makes your body hold water, while potassium flushes it out. The ideal approach is to drink plenty of water, eat more vegetables and eliminate or reduce salty snacks. Replace your regular table salt with Himalayan Pink Salt – it has over 50 different essential minerals.
3. Increase your intake of Collagen
To build up your muscles and nourish your skin, you need specific amino acids. Many women do not eat enough protein. Thus they are deficient in these amino acids. With age we produce less collagen, resulting in weakened, dimpled skin. Collagen is the number one food for getting rid of cellulite. It is rich in proline and glycine. The best source of collagen and it’s powerful sister gelatin, is bone broth. Drink one to two cups daily to strengthen your cells. The Chinese know that one of the best sources of collagen is chicken feet. Throw a couple of these into your pot of soup. Your skin will thank you.
4. Coffee Scrubs
Do a coffee scrub every few days. The primary ingredient in commercial anti-cellulite creams is caffeine. So you can get these same benefits from a homemade coffee scrub.
5. DIY Anti-Cellulite Cream
In a small bowl, mix 3 -5 drops of grapefruit essential oil (or use lemon oil), with 3 -5 drops of Cyprus essential oil and one teaspoon of coconut oil. Massage the affected area for at least 2 minutes daily. The rinds of citrus fruits help to cleanse the lymphatic system.
6. Dry skin brushing
This helps support circulation and lymphatic flow. Buy a natural fibre brush (or the traditional bathing bristle sponge) Do not wet – Use it dry. Brush your skin starting with your feet, moving up towards the heart. Do this 5 – 20 minutes a day before jumping into the shower. This improves circulation and aids detoxification – a powerful aid in clearing cellulite.
As with every self-care habit, be consistent and be patient. The results do not come overnight. As you persevere you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see improvements. Note that there is no permanent medical cure for cellulite.
